About the Book

This introduction to humanity’s understanding of reasoned logic and/or rational thought, starts before the dawn of human history. It goes from the spiritual world of tribal beliefs to the story of the three great philosophers who introduced logical common sense to those who chose to adopt them. Their early followers had significant successes. Hundreds of years later, their followers’ elite changed the interpretation of the original message. The fortunes of future generations declined.

Starting in the 16th century, a small group advocated for logical lifestyle changes that went on to underpin the developments made by Modern Western Civilization. It is an attitude, not a geographic location. That attitude includes freedoms of thought, speech and actions modified by natural or Judeo-Christian morality of use logical common sense, treat others as you would have them treat you, education, be truthful and a good work ethic. It does not include indoctrination, superstition or re-writing history. Democracy limits government excesses.

They were the principles that gave Westerners their advantages over people with other belief systems. Almost all of the modern benefits now available were developed in countries where many people had those attitudes. Many of them are listed in 10.2. In terms of longevity and population increase, figures 1 and 2 show the biggest beneficiaries were those in colonized and developing countries.

This book shows the many advantages humanity gained when a reasonable amount of common sense was introduced. Those benefits are neither available nor equally spread to all people. Many of the elite try to achieve greater equality for those considered disadvantaged by removing common sense values from the achieving communities through indoctrination. Its result is diminished benefits for all.

Modern benefits came from adopting common sense attitudes and values. Those who truly wish to improve the disadvantaged would do well to show the disadvantaged how to intertwine aspects of common sense attitudes into their traditions. Those who have adopted those values fare better than those who have not. That is common sense in action. It is available to all who choose to adopt it and disadvantages all who ignore it.

Showing little understanding of common sense, many of the current elite seek to remove it from societal behaviour. Their preferred technique is suppression of free speech, indoctrination and ignoring natural morality. Their success can be measured by the increased turmoil and decreased living standards in western countries. Methods of countering their influence are suggested. Social commentators, academics, politicians and other interested parties can debate forever about solutions to this, that or the other social problem. All are caused by a lack of common sense. It should be the foundations of civilization, not an extreme to be suppressed.
